Can I cut the lead wires to the length I need—that is the wire from the edge of the mat that was rolled up in the middle of the roll.

You may shorten the lead wires. The leads off the end of the mat are non-heated cables with virtually no resistance. Shortening the lead wires has no effect on the way the system works.

When making the cut, please ensure that the factory slice (a bulge on the wire that will right on the edge of the heating mat) does not get cut out as it is against electrical code to run the heating wire from the mat into the wall.
