VCT on slab

I want to put heat under slate on a concrete slab. There is VCT on slab now. Will the VCT have to be removed? Space is apprx 300 sq ft. – 8 ft below grade on one side – above grade on the other- block walls with 6 ft sliding door. This apt is below heated living space. Ceiling has R16 insulation. Any idea what it will cost to use as sole heating for this room only. Other rooms have baseboard units. Total sq ft is apprx 1400. Location is Asheville NC |

They vinyl composition tile will not need to be removed. I would definitely recommend putting some sort of insulation over the tile to ensure that the heat will move up through your new floor – 1/4” cork or Wedi board work very well in this instance. Regarding your second question, it is very tough to say whether or not the system will work as a primary heat source without doing a heat loss calculation. Here is the link to our online heat loss calculator: http://hlc.warmlyyours.com/room/index_main just plug in the dimensions and values of the room and it will give you a definitive answer at the end.
