I have two rooms that are adjacent, (Laundry Room and Kitchen) and am wondering if I can use one Smartstat for both?

I’m looking at 21 sqft of 120v heating mat for the Laundry room, and 46 sqft of 120v mat for the Kitchen. While the rooms are adjacent, there is about 12-15 feet between where the two mat would be placed. The easiest place for me to put the thermostat is at the far end of the kitchen run, although I’m sure the best place technically would be in the middle between the two.

Kevin,

The only real limitation as to what you can run off of one thermostat is the amp draw of the heating mats. Our thermostats have a 15 amp capacity. Going off of the figures you provided me we are looking at 82 square feet, which would be pulling around 10-10.5 amps. There should be no problem for you to run both areas off of one thermostat.

Placing your sensor wire in the kitchen should not be a problem for you, as long as the kitchen temperature is representative of the temperature in both areas. As one thermostat will be feeding both mats, they will heat up evenly.

I hope this answers your questions, if anything else comes up, please don’t hesitate to contact me again.

Seth, thanks for the response, that does indeed anwer my question! I would expect the temp of the floors in the two rooms to be reasonable close (within +/- a degree or 2) as they are both on the same crawlspace.

An additional question, in the installation instructions I downloaded off the site, it says the lead wires can be extended, which I will obviously need to do. Do I need a special kind of wire to do that, or can I just wire nut the lead wires to some 12/2 Romex in a junction box to extended it over to the Kitchen?

Kevin,

As long as the flooring type in both of the areas is similar, you should only have a few degree variance between the too rooms.

The lead wires can definitely be extended – we can send out additional lengths to you if needed, or as you suggested you could use a junction box. If you decide to go the j-box route, i would use a 12/3, as you have the two separate conductors and a ground.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!
